In recognition of National Community Action Month, we celebrate today as Throwback Thursday—a day to look back, through photos, over the 50-plus years of YCCAC’s service to our communities.
Like most Community Action agencies, YCCAC started small, with only two programs—Head Start and Transportation. The agency grew as funding was appropriated and needs were identified. Heating Assistance, Outreach Services, WIC Nutrition, and Health Services were added in time. Some programs were handed off to other nonprofits (York County Shelter took the Incubator Kitchen, opening a site in Biddeford for community members to start and run their own small businesses), and other programs ran as long as need and/or funding permitted.
But the core of YCCAC remains sound. Our programs are established in the communities we serve, and are rightly considered as critical components of the infrastructure of the 29 towns and cities that make up York County.
